Photoshop Basics: Concepts & Definitions

Photoshop, Tutorials Add comments

I’ll start my tutorials with the basics (to help some of my beginner friends) as I am exploring Adobe Photoshop CS3. I learned Photoshop 7 at school (Learned previous version by myself before school as well), worked with Photoshop CS for 3 years and I am now in front of Photoshop CS3 which was a huge, but happy shocked for me. I must admit that I was a big Photoshop user before school, but since work I have more interest in Illustrator. ^_^;

My basics tutorial will cover the basics of how to use Photoshop to work with your digital images. and introduce you to the concepts in Photoshop. The best way to develop your skills is to experiment it, but a good base is a must.

So I’ll start with some definitions to be sure you know what I’m talking about.

LAYER
A layer can be described as a single transparent sheets which hold a part of an image and an Photoshop document is composed of layers stacked on top of another. These layers can contain images, text, and vector graphics, and can be rearranged and grouped like you want. Here’s an example of how the website header looks when all the layers are broken apart and also how it looks in your Layers palette. Each layer stacks on top of the previous one.

SELECTION
When you work on an image, you often want to select/isolate some part of the image and do something with it. A selection refer to an area of an layer that you highlight. Once you have selected an area, you can apply a color, do a copy/paste/cut, resize it, rotate it, distort it, change its texture, etc. You can make very complex selection such as hair. Making selection is another big subject in Photoshop and will be explain in another tutorial.

PSD
Photoshop file format which contains all the layers. You can save in other format as well (jpg, png, gif, etc.), but when you open it in Photoshop, you’ll only see one layer.
